Find out how going Hybrid can make your life easier, and save you money.
What is a plug-in hybrid car?
A plug-in hybrid pairs an electric motor with a traditional combustion engine. So, you get the best of both worlds. Up to 26 miles of pure electric driving for the city, plus the convenience of a fuel engine for big adventures.
How do plug-in hybrids work?
Plug-in hybrids allow you to use an electric motor or a combustion engine – and you can use both in one journey if you need to.
You can charge the electric motor by plugging it in, either at home or at a charging station. And you can fill up the combustion engine with fuel at the petrol station. Plus, the electric motor can self-charge while you drive – during braking and coasting, the electric motor converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy, which is then passed back to the electric motor.
When you first hit the road, your hybrid will be powered by its electric motor. And when the battery gets low, or if you need extra power, your car will seamlessly switch over to the combustion engine.
How does the switch between electric and fuel work?
Plug-in hybrids switch between electric and fuel without you having to lift a finger. The combustion engine kicks in automatically when the electric battery runs low, or when extra power is needed – either for bursts of acceleration or if you’re driving at faster speeds.
Can I keep driving after the tank is empty?
Yes, for a while. If your electric battery has power, you can keep driving even if you don’t have any fuel in the tank. But it’s a good idea to keep the tank partially full, especially if you’re going on a longer journey.
How often does the countryman plug-in hybrid need charging?
The Countryman Plug-In Hybrid gives you up to 26 miles of electric driving – and keeping it charged is as easy as plugging in your phone. The car’s high-tech lithium-ion battery can be completely recharged in around four hours using a household socket. And that time can be reduced to around two hours if a 3.7kW wallbox is used.
How often you need to charge your battery will depend on how far and how often you’re driving. But if you can, try to charge your battery after every drive.
How does a hybrid self-charge on the move?
Plug-in hybrids self-charge by capturing the energy that usually gets lost when you slow your car down. When you brake or coast, the electric motor converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy. The electrical energy is stored in the high-voltage battery, and is then used to drive the electric motor.
What are the benefits of switching to a hybrid?
Plug-in hybrids are cheaper to run and better for the environment than traditional fuel-powered cars, without giving up any of the power or convenience you’re used to.
Charging the battery of your electric motor is much cheaper than filling up with fuel. And with the Countryman Plug-In Hybrid’s electric mode, you can make daily journeys without using a drop of gas. Even when the combustion engine is in use, the hybrid system reduces the amount of fuel that gets used, meaning you can go further for less.
The Countryman’s low emissions also help you to save money while protecting the planet. If you’re driving in London, you won’t have to pay the city’s usual congestion charge. And if you’re using the Countryman as a company car, you’ll pay just 9% tax as part of the Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax band.
Am I eligible for the UK government grant?
Unfortunately the Countryman Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t qualify for the UK government’s low-emission plug-in grant. However, you can get up to £350 (including VAT) off the cost of installing a charger at home through the government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme.
Plus, you can make big savings elsewhere. If you’re using the Plug-in Hybrid as a company car, you’ll qualify for the 14% Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax band. And if you’re driving in London, you won’t have to pay the congestion charge.
How do I look after a hybrid car?
You don’t need to do anything special to look after your plug-in hybrid, just the usual checks and maintenance you’d expect from a traditional car. That means regular engine maintenance like checking the oil, as well as making sure your tyres are inflated properly.
The electric battery is designed to last, and an advanced cooling system keeps it at its optimum temperature. Plus, using the electric battery reduces the wear and tear on the combustion engine – meaning it won’t need maintenance too often.
What’s the environmental impact of hybrid cars?
Plug-in hybrids help you look after the planet without sacrificing convenience. The electric mode of MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid allows you to drive up to 26 miles without any local CO2 emissions. And when the combustion engine kicks in, the car is still eco-friendly. The hybrid system reduces fuel consumption, meaning the Countryman gives off just 43g/km of CO2 emissions – under half the average emissions level of new fuel-powered cars.
Are hybrids safe and reliable?
The MINI Countryman Plug-In Hybrid is designed for safety as much as it is for adventure. And it comes with the same promise of reliability that you’d expect from every MINI.
The Countryman received a five-star score in Euro NCAP crash tests, and standard safety kit includes autonomous emergency braking and a bonnet that pops up slightly in a pedestrian collision to help cushion the impact.
What’s the resale value of a hybrid?
Like with every car, the resale value of your hybrid largely depends on how old it is, how many miles it’s been driven and how well it’s been looked after. But there are some key features that help plug-in hybrids to keep their value.
Plug-in hybrids are fuel-efficient and cheap to run, which means they’re always likely to be in high demand. And their low emissions mean they comply with emerging emission standards and qualify for lower tax bands – making them ready for the future. Plus, MINIs are known to depreciate in value much slower than other models.
