Public Charging made easy.

ELECTRIC CHARGING FAQS.

There are three types of public chargers available:

Rapid Charging
The fastest charging points are typically found at motorway service stations and on main routes. They use a DC supply to charge rapidly at a rating of up to 50kw. Using this method, you can charge your electric  MINI from 0-80% in as little as 28 minutes.

Fast Charging
Fast charging points are the most common and deliver an AC supply at a higher rating of either 7.4kw or 11kw. While an electric MINI can use both, it has a maximum rating of 11kw with an AC supply. Which means, depending on your model (different models have different sized batteries),  a full charge would take between 4:15 hrs and 6:30 hrs.

Slow Charging
Slow charging points are less common and tend to be older devices. They deliver an AC power supply and are rated at up to 2.3kw. If you have enough time, an electric MINI can achieve a full charge in 12 hours. You can also use this method by charging with a standard 3 pin plug.

Many AC public charging stations require you to bring your own Type 2 cable. Type 2 chargers are the most common charging type for electric vehicles in the UK. They offer the same power as a home charger. Your MINI includes a Type 2 cable, enabling you to charge wherever you go.

CCS Fast Chargers include the cable and are the standard for rapid charging in the UK and Europe. You can also take advantage of fast charging of up to 50 kW via the Combined Charging System (CCS). No additional hardware is needed for these charging points.

The upper part of the plug resembles the Type 2 plug, while the more powerful connectors below allow for direct current (DC) with a much higher voltage and amperage. AC power has to be transformed by your vehicle, while DC power directly charges your battery.

Please note that plug-in hybrids usually don’t support CCS as the smaller battery can’t take as much power.

We wanted to make charging on the go even easier, so we introduced MINI Charging – our handy system that gives you instant access to one of the largest public charging networks and will allow you to seamlessly connect to over 50,000 electric vehicle charging points in the UK.

All you need to do is scan your card or the mobile app at the charging point and you’ll be charged for any usage at the end of the month. Of course, you can see how much you’ve spent at any time in your online account.

Currently in the UK the electric MINI Charging network is connected to charging points from key operators such as BP Pulse, Instavolt, Gridserve, Shell Recharge and many others, as well as high-power charging stations available via our partner IONITY.

It’ll also give you access to stations in all other MINI Charging markets within Europe. See the MINI charging website for more information.

If you don’t receive a card from your sales advisor during handover then you can order one by registering at https://mini-charging.com/web/mini-gb. If you’ve already received one, then you’ll need to activate it before it can be used.

First, find your nearest charging point using MINI Navigation, the MINI Charging App, or the MINI App. Then, to start your charging session use either your RFID card or mobile app, depending on the charge point.

The current price for each charging point is shown in the MINI Charging app or on the website. We recommended checking the price before you start charging.

In your electric MINI, you’re never far away from a public charging point. And there’s more than one way to find them.

·       MINI’s smart Navigation System features a handy charging map showing all compatible charging stations in range, before routing you to your chosen one.

·       Take control with the MINI App. Plan routes in advance based on your battery usage. Keep track of your available charge. And find charging points fast for longer journeys or top-ups.

·       Download Zap Map. This handy EV charging app helps you find more than 15,000 public charging points across the UK. Plan routes and find charging points, tailored around your battery usage.

ELECTRIC CHARGING FAQS.

To get the most out of home charging, it’s best to use a dedicated home charger like the Pod unit offered in partnership with MINI. It’s faster and more efficient than a standard 3-pin plug, and designed with safety in mind. You can also optimise your charging by:

·       Charging overnight, when electricity rates may be lower (depending on your energy tariff).

·       Using a smart charger or charging app to schedule charging times and track energy use.

·       Keeping your battery between 20–80% for everyday driving, which can help preserve battery health over time.

It depends on a range of factors like the speed of the charging point you use, and the size and condition of the battery. Did you know charging your electric vehicle’s battery between 10-80% is often more efficient than waiting for a one-time full charge? And that charging actually slows down once it gets above 80% capacity? You do now. So for maximum range, try not to let it go right down to empty and avoid charging all the way up to 100%.

You can see official charging times for our models here.

Lucky enough to have a house with a garage or driveway? This is probably where you’ll do most of your charging.

As standard, your electric MINI comes with one cable designed to work with a home charger or public charging point, where the AC power supply is increased. This allows you to charge an electric MINI much quicker at home and when you’re out and about. You can also purchase additional charging cables such as a 3-pin charging cable for occasional use. Home charge units cost around £1,000 to buy and install.

But how much will it cost to charge your electric car once it’s plugged in? That all depends on what you pay for your electricity and how often it needs charging.

Our partner Pod recommends charging an electric car at home -  it's the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your car fully charged. The average domestic electricity rate in the whole of the UK is about 24.5p per kWh*, meaning charging an electric car at home costs about £13 for a full charge**.

*Please note, energy prices vary and can go up and down. To find your current cost per kWh, please check your electricity bill or contact your provider.
**Costs calculated at 24.5p/kWh based on usable battery is ~54kWh (90%).

CHARGING THAT FITS YOUR SCHEDULE.

Thanks to intelligent planning, your MINI charges automatically at the best times - factoring in your departure schedule and charging goals. All managed easily through the MINI App.

COST-EFFICIENT POWER.

Charging at home can help you save on costs by making the most of dynamic electricity tariffs and solar power from your photovoltaic system.* It's a smarter way to charge - and kinder to your wallet.

*Savings depend on local rates, solar availability, and individual conditions.

REDUCE YOUR IMPACT.

Make the most of your solar energy! By optimizing charging for times of excess solar power, you can reduce reliance on conventional electricity sources and thereby help lower you overall CO2 footprint.
