HOW FAR DO YOU DRIVE?
Of course, real-world range can vary depending on a few key factors, such as driving style, weather conditions, and terrain. On this page, we’ll explore what affects your all-electric MINI’s driving range and how you can get the most out of every charge.
The CO2, electric range and mpg figures shown have been determined according to the WLTP test and are provided for comparability purposes with other cars tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the starting charge of the battery, accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles, fuel type and vehicle load. Battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. Whilst we recommend the battery is normally charged to 80% to help optimise the health and life of your battery, these WLTP electric range figures were obtained after the battery had been charged to 100%. A guide on fuel economy and CO2 emissions which contains data for all new passenger car models is available at any point of sale free of charge. BUILT TO BOOST YOUR RANGE.
RANGE-HACKING MADE EASY.
Your MINI has just the right features to go the extra mile. Flip into Efficient Mode to enjoy a smoother ride with maximised energy recovery. And when every mile counts, MAX RANGE gets serious: top speed is limited to 56mph and comfort features like climate control or seat heating are dialed down. That way every bit of energy flows into moving forward. Want to check your current range with just one look? The range circle in the MINI Navigation System tells you how far you can go on your current range. And if your destination lies beyond the range, no stress - your MINI automatically adds the best charging stops to your route or suggests alternatives along the way.
DRIVE SMART. GO EVEN FURTHER.
GO THE DISTANCE.
Electric adventures? Absolutely. Whether it’s a weekend escape to the in-laws or a full-on family camping expedition, your all-electric MINI is more than ready to go the distance. With a little know-how and some clever planning, long journeys become just another reason to love going electric.
Ready to make the most of every mile? Here are the key factors that can influence your driving range, and how to stay one step ahead.
FACTORS AFFECTING ELECTRIC CAR RANGE.
HEATING AND COOLING.
You can’t control the weather, but it does have a big effect on the electric range. Low temperatures reduce battery capacity and increase energy consumption as you turn up the heating. In hot weather, using the air con to keep your car cool has the same effect.
Very high temperatures can also cause your battery to lose power and even degrade faster – even with the battery cooling systems working hard. That’s why you should avoid leaving your car in direct sunlight for long periods when the temperature is high (above 30 degrees), especially if it’s fully charged.
PRE-CONDITIONING.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING.
Regenerative braking is a super handy mechanism found in electric vehicles. It converts the (usually wasted) kinetic energy that’s created when you slow down into electrical energy, which is sent back to the battery to charge it and helps to extend your MINI's range.
The regenerative braking function is adjustable in electric MINIs, so keep it set at the highest level for the best results. You can also make the most of the smart one-pedal driving mode, which lets you come to an almost complete stop without touching your brakes. The result? More energy that can be returned to the battery – and increased range. It’s especially useful on steep hills as you can recover more energy on the way back down.
GREEN DRIVING MODES.
SPEED AND STYLE.
Leave plenty of time for your journey and take it easy. The lower your speed, the less energy you’ll use, helping to extend your driving range. A smoother driving style will also help to save energy, making the most of regenerative braking and anticipating the road ahead.
Think of the smoothest thing you can – and drive like it. Even with regenerative braking in action, fast acceleration and hard braking can waste battery energy. So take things steady and gently for maximum efficiency and to increase your electric car’s range. Keeping your speed down can help keep your range up too, as the quicker you drive, the more energy you use – and the harder the motor works.
ROUTE PLANNING.
Plan ahead with the MINI App and use your smart navigation system to tailor your routes to your battery usage. Your MINI will automatically suggest charging stops taking into account your available range and the destination. You can also use the ECO route to make journeys more energy efficient.
Check out a charging map before you set off to get an idea of how many charging points are on your route, where you can find them and when might make sense for you to stop.
Once you’ve found where to charge, you need to make sure you leave enough time in your journey’s schedule for charging. Luckily, with high-speed charging options at most motorway service stations, your car’s battery could be up to 80% in as little time as it takes you to refuel with a sandwich. Electric MINIs come with a CCS socket, so they are compatible with virtually any public charger in the UK – and beyond!
It can be tempting to try and get from A to B as quickly as possible. But if you’re not in a rush, taking a slightly longer or slower route can also work wonders on your battery life. That’s because steadier speeds use less power, plus braking more often helps to regenerate the battery. And let’s face it, those country roads are much more scenic than the M5.
SMART CHARGING.
Did you know charging your electric vehicle’s battery between 10-80% is often more efficient than waiting for a one-time full charge? And that charging actually slows down once it gets above 80% capacity? So for maximum range, try not to let it go right down to empty and avoid charging all the way up to 100%. We recommend only charging up to 80% for your shorter everyday trips – like popping to the shops, driving to the gym or running the kids to school. Save those full charge sessions for your long-distance adventures.
