Gentle, slow charging.

For everyday charging, electric car batteries thrive on a slow and steady approach. Using a Pod home charger or standard AC public charging station helps to preserve long-term battery health, meaning your all-electric MINI stays energised for longer. Reserve rapid charging—like High-Power Charging (HPC) at fast-charging stations—for those longer adventures when you need to top up quickly and get back on the road. It’s all about balance: smart charging today means more miles tomorrow.

Plug-in only if required.

Only charge when you need to - and not after every journey. When parking your car, low to medium states of charge are better for the service of the electric car battery.

Charge to 100% for long journeys.

A state of charge between 10% and 80% for everyday driving is recommended for your electric car battery. Only charge to 100% for longer journeys, preferably just before you set off.

Set a charging target for everyday driving.

Ideally avoid full charges in everyday driving. MINI recommends a charging target of at most 80%.

Avoid empty batteries.

Charge your battery before its state of charge falls below 10%. Ideally maintain the state of charge within the recommended range of 10% - 80%.

Moderate driving styles go easy on the battery.

Leave plenty of time for your journey and take it easy. The lower your speed, the less energy you’ll use, helping to extend your driving range. Accelerate moderately and drive in an anticipatory manner at a steady speed to look after your electric car battery. That also means fewer visits to charging stations.

Keep consumption low.

Avoid carrying unnecessary luggage or roof boxes. This will reduce your energy consumption and ease pressure on the electric car battery.

Moderate temperatures are ideal.

You can’t control the weather, but it does have a big effect on the electric range and the health of your car battery. Low temperatures reduce battery capacity and increase energy consumption as you turn up the heating. In hot weather, using the air con to keep your car cool has the same effect. Preferably, park your electric car in the shade or in a garage in hot weather, especially if you plan to park it for a long period of time.

Moderate battery charge state over long stationary periods.

An electric car battery discharges energy very slowly when it is parked. Therefore, it's not advisable to connect your car to a charging post before longer stationary periods, for example when you're going on holiday. The ideal state of charge for the battery is 30-50%.

Electric car batteries can discharge slowly when not in use due to what’s called self-discharge. This occurs naturally in all batteries as small amounts of energy are lost over time, even when the car is not being driven. However, the rate of discharge is typically low, and the latest MINI electric vehicles are designed to minimise self-discharge thanks to their advanced battery management systems.
You can influence the service life of your battery with clever time management when charging. It's preferable to charge the battery shortly before your planned departure time. This applies especially to AC charging overnight. To this end, you can use the practical “Charging within a time frame” function in the MINI App. This allows you to set the optimal charging start time. This ensures that your vehicle is perfectly prepared for your next trip. In day-to-day use, AC charging is the best option for conserving your battery. Charging the battery to 80 percent extends the service life of the battery and enhances the charging power. Are you planning a longer journey? If so, DC quick chargers along the route are the perfect choice for quick stops along the way. If you don't plan to use your MINI electric car for a longer period of time, you should keep it at a state of charge between 30 and 50 percent. This also conserves the integrity of the battery in the long term.
