25 YEARS OF ENGINE PRODUCTION.
Located in North Warwickshire, BMW Group’s UK engine manufacturing facility is celebrating its 25th year. Initially, Plant Hams Hall produced one engine family. By 2006 it began building engines specifically for MINI. It came at a time when this British icon underwent several model updates to improve its fuel consumption and emissions. Since 2001, there has been significant growth in the machining hall and annual production has trebled. Today, Plant Hams Hall has manufactured more than 7.6 million engines and over 22 million machined components.
"This anniversary is a special milestone for our site," says plant director, Dirk Dreher. "There’s always been a real passion among our workforce to continually improve our manufacturing processes and site.”
BUILT AROUND INNOVATION.
Since achieving fame in the 60s, MINI has significantly evolved, but remained true to its famous go-kart feel and impeccable cornering. This is thanks to BMW Group’s constant innovation from components to supply chains. Plant Hams Hall is a key part of a technology-open approach, supplying production sites globally with the latest generation of engines and power units.
“The site combines technological expertise with high flexibility. It reliably supplies our vehicle plants with efficient, powerful engines of premium quality,” says head of engine production, Harald Gottsche.
SETTING A BENCHMARK IN SUSTAINABILITY.
Since conception, the Hams Hall team has regarded sustainability as a key pillar of production. The last 25 years has seen a 61% reduction in energy required to build each engine. This means despite producing significantly more engines for MINI and across the BMW UK portfolio, Hams Hall's energy requirements have been consistent since 2001. As the plant looks to the future, it continues to follow the manufacturing principles of BMW iFactory, a holistic production strategy for efficiency, sustainability and digitisation.
S FOR SPORT.
One of the gems to come out of Plant Hams Hall is the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, which drives the MINI Cooper S. With more power and torque than the Cooper C model, its sporting credentials impress. Beyond the engine, the suspension and dampening system give the MINI Cooper S that legendary handling, designed for complete MINI fun. Enjoy.
