THE AUSTIN POWERS MINI COOPER. YEAH, BABY!

REVISITING OUR BIG SCREEN ICON.

The 2001 MINI Cooper took the world by storm, yet perhaps its most iconic moment came as the Union Jack-adorned star of Mike Myers’ spy-spoof sequel ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’. To celebrate 20 years since its debut, we felt it was time to take another look at this very special MINI.

THE AUSTIN POWERS MINI COOPER.

The first Austin Powers film was produced in 1997 during Britpop’s heyday, the musical and cultural movement that swept the world in the mid-90s. With hindsight, its global popularity (and two successful sequels) was to be expected. And that a MINI – an unmistakable symbol of Britishness all over the world – should play a starring role seemed both fitting and inevitable.
The Austin Powers MINI Cooper became instantly iconic.

GOLDMEMBER: AN ALL-STAR CAST.

The time finally came in 2002 when our Union Jack-emblazoned MINI Cooper appeared in Austin Powers 3. In the film the MINI belongs to Austin Powers’ father, played by Michael Caine. Caine had already helped MINI find global fame back in 1969, with one of the most legendary chase scenes of all time in ‘The Italian Job’.

BEYONCE AND MINI MAKE DEBUTS.

Goldmember also stars Beyonce, who made her film debut as Austin’s new sidekick, Foxxy Cleopatra. It’s safe to say that both Beyonce and the MINI Cooper have gone from strength to strength since then.

The first Austin Powers MINI Cooper scene sees our heroes in hot pursuit of the film’s villain. This colourful chase through the streets of Tokyo reinforced MINI’s unique sense of style and character.

A (LEFT-SIDED) STAR IS BORN…

Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed that even though the driving scenes take place in Japan, the car’s steering wheel is on the left side of the cockpit, not the right.

Whether as a right or left-wheel drive, the Austin Powers Goldmember MINI Cooper became an instant icon, so much so that we put it front and centre during our 100-year anniversary celebrations of the MINI plant in Oxford.

THE MINI ONE-OFF SERIES.

From Paul Smith collaborations to a special edition ‘MINI Italian Job’ in 1992, our history is enriched by a long list of one-off cars. Whether they were created for movies, noble causes, or designed by celebrities to show the world the many faces of MINI’s personality, we love them all equally.

MINI continues to evolve to meet the cultural, practical, and technological demands of the day. It’s an icon that never sits still.
