EXCLUSIVE DESIGN SKETCHES OF THE MINI ELECTRIC.

Have you heard? A new era of go-kart handling is on its way; the MINI Electric is coming.

So, where did the idea for it begin?

As with every concept MINI creates, the model started with a sketch. A loose visual concept of what’s to come.

The first sketches, which you see here, were revealed alongside MINI Electric Concept UK debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018.

A DECADE IN THE MAKING.

This will be MINI’s first fully-electric car, and represents the next stage in the electrification of the MINI brand. It follows on from the MINI E pilot project ten years ago and the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid model, which has been on sale since 2017.

“MINI is an urban brand and the fully-electric MINI the logical next step into the future,” says Oliver Heilmer, Head of MINI Design. “These initial sketches for the fully electrified MINI outline our vision of authentic design creating a bridge between the history of the brand and its electric future.”

COMBINING THE PAST AND THE FUTURE.

So let’s dig into the look. The sketches show the grille of the car. Its hexagonal form is a signature MINI design element – but the closed-off interpretation is all new. Behind the grille, cooling elements you’d find on a traditional engine are no longer needed – which means the grille can stay closed, improving aerodynamics.

The yellow accent bar and E badge stand out from the crowd. They shout to the world; this is an electric MINI.

The second sketch shows the striking wheel design of the fully-electric MINI, which has been carried over from the MINI Electric Concept into the production model. The wheels take the motif of the accent bar on the radiator grille and add their own asymmetrical twist.
